Uploaded And Ready To Edit

So we now have all of our footage on my laptop. We have uploaded it all and been through most of it to cut out the bits that are obvious we wont need.

The film editing software that we are going to use is Sony Vegas Platinum. This is because that out of all of the software available to us, this is the most high tech and will help us achieve the most professional standard possible.

The other software that we could have chosen were:

  • Windows Movie Maker - this is the most basic piece of film editing software. It is suitable for cutting and splicing shots together but the effects are not particularly interesting nor are there very many. You cannot do things such as speed up or slow down footage to the degree that you want.
  • IMovie - this is the Mac version of Windows Movie Maker. This means that of course it is better than Windows Movie Maker, however, it still has limited effects and preferences, best for making home movies.
  • Adobe Premiere Elements - this is a very nice piece of software to use, even if I have the old version. The step up from iMovie to Premiere Elements is a huge one. All of a sudden there are so many more options in terms of effects, music, transitions etc etc. I have used this for a while and am fairly used to it. However, what I would say is that it is lacking in some very basic things such as 'fade to white' as a transition which is something that I would a fair amount if it were available to me.

  • Sony Vegas Platinum - this is by far the most advanced piece of software available to us. It allows us to splice together pieces of footage very acuratly, speed up or slow it down to the exact time we want, it allows to customize our titles and reads footage in almost all formats. In terms of sountrack, it also includes the option to mix your own piece of music using files that you can edit together and change as much as you want.  It is the most professional compared to the others and designed for amateur film makers making it the most suitable for our piece.

This is a clip of unedited footage that we are going to use shot from the first floor window of a block of flats. This is fairly near the end of the opening and I feel that it is one of our strongest shots although we may have to crop it down slightly as you do get a full view of our bags and kit on the corner of the road which I feel is a great shame and greatly regret not noticing earlier so that we could reshoot it.

In terms of script, as the only speaking is the narration going in afterwards, we will not write it until we have fully edited all of the footage and put the background music in. This way we can match the commentary exactly to the action.
